I was pleasantly surprised at now well the entire vineyard recovered from the El Nino- Even the 10% that looked on the edge of death in ‘98. Two things contributed to the smallest crop in years: #1 the lack of sun in the spring of 1998 when the fruit buds were forming. & #2 The extra conservative pruning I gave each vine because I saw a need to aid healing of the plants after the severe El Nino of ’98! I even took the opportunity to remove any arms remaining below my nee (which if done 15 years ago would have been 95% of the vineyard!) 4’ X 4’ X 4’ Pile of removed Zinfandel Arms >>>>
This Vintage, when it opens up, reflects the Elegance &
Raspberry fruit flavors of our ’97 while showing some of that Black Pepper that
so favorably dominates our ’98 but has more layers of complexity all of which
should easily age for many years. Our style of Zinfandel tends to be a more
fruit focused & balanced in a way that tends reward more age than some consider
‘traditional for Zinfandel’. When uncorked young, this one takes some time to
release its complexities. When we release it I recommend decanting our 1999 for
an hour or 2 or safe storage till at least 2005 & beyond!
This is our first vintage in the up-scaled package that includes a darker 2pound bottle, clearer Labels, Upscale foils & most importantly; top-end cork for aging! >>>>
